Team Effectiveness: Ownership

Team Ownership

Often times it is imperative for leaders and managers to be effective, but for leaders to be effective they have to have an effective team. Well, which comes first, the chicken or the egg? Leaders must lead teams to be effective, but how do team members actually become effective members on a team?

In the wake of the economic downturn that has overwhelmed commerce in general, teams have much more difficulty using team skills, as it is now every man and woman for themselves. Team dynamics have changed rapidly as a result of economic layoffs and business in general in a decline.

So with the changes of the team dynamic, how can managers and team leaders effectively engage teams to be more united and take teamwork into consideration? It is important, no matter what the economic challenges that leaders give each person ownership over particular areas of a team. The only way for teams work in unison is to have them know that they are secure and that they are a pertinent aspect of the team dynamic.

In having each person take ownership over their respective areas, it ensures that team members are not acting as though it is every woman and man for themselves, but rather a team effort geared toward team success.

Peter, a fourth grader commented that “it was great to be able to know that my part of the team was so important. It made me feel as though I was needed.” Such a simple concept allows for corporate teams to identify that innate feelings for people show that the only way for a teammate to feel as though they should look out for the good of the team and invest in the team, is by feeling as though they are needed.

The next time your team is in dire need of teamwork, start thinking of ways in which each team member can become more a part of the team through allowing each person to take ownership of various aspects of the end success of the team. No matter who actually cuts the ribbon, each team member must feel as though they are holding the ribbon to feel as though they too have accomplished something for the team.
