Imagine a time when a team member had no interest in what was going on within the team. Often times we think about how a leader isn’t engaging a person into the team, but sometimes the focus needs to be on team members. Although someone might not be the leader, or have a crucial role, but every role within a team is necessary and crucial to the success of the team.
There are certain characteristics within team members that must be present for the teammate to be of value to the team. First and foremost, a team member cannot just be present, they must be active and be willing to contribute to the methodology agreed upon by the team. Even though the methodology of the team might not be what a teammate wanted, they have to invest into the idea that is present and expect that it will work. The moment that a team member is just waiting for failure, that is the moment a team is set up for failure.
Secondly, it is of utmost importance that team members believe in the team as a whole. Yes, each team has weaknesses and strengths, however, it if important that team members believe in why the team was organized. Teammates must want to succeed and must believe in what the team is doing.
Team unity, trust and leadership are very important aspects of a team, but if there are team members that are just not invested into the team, something must be done to get team members on-board with what is going on, and invested in the team goals. How do you get the members of your team to invest? I think realizing the importance of putting aside individual goals for the overall team goal is step one. Watch here for more tips next week…
