Blind Shapes Activity
Each team member receives a blindfold and places it over their eyes. The facilitator prepares a length of 40-50 feet of rope tied together in a circle. Each team member takes hold of a section of the rope.
The team elects a leader who does not put a blindfold on. The leader is the only person allowed to speak. The facilitator calls out a shape. For example “triangle”; with more difficult shapes for more advanced teams. The leader of the team calls out instructions to each team member as to where to move in order to form the designated shape with the rope.
This activity can be done with five or more team members and can be done with multiple teams. Teams can compete to be the first to complete the shape. The team should follow up after the activity with a reflection discussion on trust and why it is important for individuals on a team to trust each other and its importance to the success of each organization.
Reflection Questions: Please note that the following questions can be used by the facilitator to help lead the reflection discussion after the activity is completed. Facilitators can use these questions or other questions generated as a result of the observations from the activity.
- How did trust play a role in success or failure in this activity?
- How can teams develop trust in the workplace?
- How do you think a lack of trust would prohibit a team’s effectiveness?
- What was difficult or frustrating in this activity? Relate it to a workplace scenario.
